A Brief History of the Kratom Plant in East Asia

1Kratom (or kertum as it is known to some) has been chewed by the native Thai peoples in ints raw leaf form for thousands of years. Today, it is most often used by workers in monotonous labor professions to stave of exhaustion and maintain a positive outlook, even though their life is basically a living Hell. The fact that Kratom is powerful enough to keeps tens of thousands of Thai farmers, prostitutes, and bricklayers, that work 14 hours a day for the equivalent of two to ten US dollars, from committing suicide is proof of its potency!

Because the ancient Thai people did not keep written records of their medical usage of native plants, it is unknown exactly when the first peoples began to use this mystical herb as treatment for a number of ailments. It is postulated by Western theorists that many of the early “shamans” of East Asian origin began using kratom for magical and then eventually medicinal purposes sometime about 2000 years ago. They discovered that Kratom could be effective for everything from diarrhea, nausea, exhaustion, starvation cessation, and even as a treatment for premature ejaculation! (I gotta order me some Kratom apparently…)

As it has been used traditionally for such a long period of time in Thailand and other East Asian nations, it is typically not stigmatized as being a conventional “drug” such as, heroin or cocaine. However, there are many places in the world where Kratom is actually considered to be a highly potent drug and is therefore illegal to use or possess. If you intend on traveling abroad and bringing your Kratom with you – you’d be wise to check the laws of whatever nation you intend on traveling to.

Derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, Kratom continues to be a source of recreation, stimulation, and relaxation by those that have come to learn of its value in both world history and the current era.
